On the Day

A Checklist to make the most of the event on the day

Safety First - Remember that the Randonnee is NOT A RACE and IS NOT A SPORTIVE. It's a family event, on open roads for all to enjoy.

  • Please consider other road users and follow the highway code at all times, and also review and pay attention to the assessment of specific hazards along the route here
  • Consider that you will be cycling through small villages and towns, where residents will be going about their everyday business. Please be respectful at all times and be an ambassador for Cycling and the Randonnee - the event does not take priority - please also respect pedestrian only areas in towns (e.g. Cowes High Street), they are not cycle routes nor are they on the Randonnee route.
  • You are likely to encounter horses on the route during the event - please slow down and follow the simple guidelines outlined here to ensure the safety of all.
  • Take the necessary precautions to ensure you are seen by others road users!
  • In certain conditions, the South West part of the Island can become misty - we strongly recommend you bring front and rear lights just in case for the event as well high visibility clothing.
  • All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult - The parent or guardian of a child, by registering their child’s entry, is giving their consent for their child to take part in this event.
  • If you haven't already, familiarise yourself with the 8 highway code changes made in 2022  - they can be found here

Some changes for 2023...

  • Our West Wight checkpoint has moved from Yarmouth to Freshwater. We will host a small "popup" checkpoint at the old checkpoint site in Yarmouth for the first 4 ferries (Leaving 07:10, 08:15, 09:00 and 10:00 from Lymington) into Yarmouth but otherwise all further activity including the feed station will be at Yarmouth Primary School's new premises in School Green Road, Freshwater. All maps and GPX files have been updated (Route GPX and Maps)
  • We have made some improvements to our digital Brevet App to hopefully make the experience smoother and more intuitive... look forward to hearing your feedback.
  • Professional photographers from Snap My Ride will be at many of the best spots getting pictures of you in action along both routes - give them a wave if you spot them! Photos will be available to view shortly after the event at www.snapmyride.co.uk . Snap My Ride will be making a contribution to charity from any purchases relating to our event.

What to do to get the best experience....

  • What to do before the event...
    • Choose the checkpoint closest to you as the start point to check-in/register for your Randonnee (Information about the checkpoints can be found on our Event Details page) - if you're coming from the mainland on a Ferry...
      • From Lymington to Yarmouth - start at the our "pop up" at the old checkpoint site in Yarmouth which will be there to welcome you off the ferry and get your started  (Note: for 2023 the main Yarmouth checkpoint has been moved to Freshwater - this is where the feed station and QR code will be see --> Event Details for more information)
      • From Southampton to Cowes - start at the East Cowes Checkpoint
      • From Portsmouth to Fishbourne or Portsmouth to Ryde - start at the Wootton checkpoint
      • Details for ferries and offers can be found on our Travelling to the Event page
    • Download the digital brevet appp - you can now find instructions to download and use our updated digital brevet app here --> https://www.cycleisland.co.uk/randonnee/digital-brevet
    • Start the App put in your participant number, which checkpoint you plan to start from and the ride you plan to do… (all these can be changed, don’t worry).  Your participant number is on the e-ticket sent by ticketsource, and it will be in the format of  xxxxx/y (or if printed, you can scan the QR code on the e-ticket)
    • Print out your e-ticket from ticketsource or download it somewhere on your mobile where you’ll find the ticket quickly on the day - this will avoid holding up the initial registration queue if there is one…. [Don’t rely on apple mail to find the ticket on the day quickly if you registered some months ago]

  • What to do on the day when checking into the event at first checkpoint...
    • Head to your chosen starting checkpoint, bring your e-ticket with QR code or number with you (printed or mobile is fine) and checkpoint staff will scan it, and check you into the event .. you’re off…enjoy cycling around the Isle of Wight :)

  • What to do on the day when making your way around the checkpoints and completing the randonnee...
    • Each time you get to a checkpoint find the QR code for that checkpoint (you won’t be able to miss it), use the mobile app to scan it in, and you’ll get a rewarding little noise and a green mark against the checkpoint on the map!  Grab some rest, food and water :)
    • When you get back to your starting checkpoint and complete your ride, again, scan in the QR for that checkpoint and “ta-da” .. you’ve done the Isle of Wight Randonnee :)

Badges...

Those who have pre-ordered their Badges this year when they registered for the event, the Badges can be collected from the Wootton checkpoint only and at any time during the event (not just at the end) - so regardless of which checkpoint you start from, you need to collect the Badge from Wootton as you come through.

For those who have not pre-ordered, there will be limited availability at the other checkpoints….

Parking...

Please note - there is no parking at any of the checkpoints - if you need to come to a checkpoint by car, please use public car parks nearby where available.

Feed Stations...

There are feed stations at Wootton, Ventnor, Freshwater/Yarmouth and Bembridge checkpoints - snacks available at others also. Full details can be found on our Event Details page

Floating Bridge...

Cowes Floating Bridge - Wrist bands will be available for purchase at the Freshwater/Yarmouth checkpoint for £1 on the day.
